(UK, 1971)  Nunsploitation at its finest.  Director Ken Russell strips down Aldous\nHuxley’s rich, detailed history to a hellbroth of lust, erotic obsession,\nresentment, hatred, flagellation, Inquisitional torture, exorcism, mounting\nmass madness and wildly overwrought emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in 17th<\/sup>\ncentury France, Catholic priest Urbain Grandier was put on trial for making a\npact with the devil and causing an entire convent of Ursuline nuns to become\npossessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russell, who doesn’t\nknow the meaning of the word ‘excess’ and wouldn’t call it wretched if he did, goes\nfor operatic grandeur and achieves it handily with lively visuals and fine\nperformances from the whole case, headed by Oliver Reed, as Grandier who truly\nyearns for God and finds fulfillment with the local ladies, and Vanessa\nRedgrave, as Sister  Jeanne, whose crush\non Grandier leads to deepening madness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story is true and\neven more bizarre and horrifying than the movie. Participants and onlookers\nwrote extensively at the time and Huxley fills his book, The Devils Of Loudun,<\/em> with their observations and opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huxley, in his own\nvoice, guides us through the narrative and explains French social, political,\nphilosophical, scholarly and religious life with a calm clarity spiced with\noccasional bits of dry British wit. Neither writer or story are ever dull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huxley’s book is readily\navailable on amazon, but Russell’s movie is another story.  The amazon version isn’t currently available\nand may not be as advertised, so you’ll have to hunt around for a decent\nbootleg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
